19-year-old Rafael Hurtado from Chicago, started out by distributing flyers and writing newsletters for the Little Village Environmental Justice Organization (LVEJO), a nonprofit with the goal to shut down coal plants, clean up contamination, and create more green space. Rafael was soon recruited as a guide for LVEJO, and was so inspired by his guide work that he started teaching a weekly class at his school, Little Village Lawndale High, on environmental problems facing Little Village. He helps students create murals and sculptures that drum up community support.
